Snow & Ice Control Standards

Snow & Ice Control Standards

When winter weather hits, here’s how snow clearing works for pedestrians in the Village of Bible Hill:

Top Priority (cleared within 12 hours after snow ends):
• Fire station parking lot
• Sidewalks on arterial and collector roads
• Sidewalks near school drop‑off

Next Priorities:
• Local road and subdivision sidewalks (cleared within 24 hours after snow ends)
• Bible Hill Recreation Park parking lot (cleared as last priority)

What sidewalks may look like:
Generally cleared and passable, but potentially slippery areas and residual snow and ice may remain

About salt & sand:
• Salt effectiveness depends on temperature and conditions (less effective below ‑5°C).
• Sand is not widely applied and used only in limited, exceptional cases.

Important to know:
• No winter maintenance is provided on gravel parking lots, trails, trailheads, and all other areas.
• Storm intensity, duration, and temperature can affect timelines.
• Provincial and private snow clearing impacts sidewalk conditions - even immediately following snow clearing by the Village.
• These are service goals, not guarantees.

Still an issue after timelines pass?

Update: Salmon River Truss Bridge

Update: Salmon River Truss Bridge (NS Dept of Public Works)

Work on the Salmon River Truss Bridge will begin to affect traffic flow on November 21, 2025 for several weeks.

During this period:
- Traffic lights and lane closures will be in place - expect alternating lanes.
- The sidewalks will be removed and replaced, beginning with the west side. The east side sidewalk will remain open until the west side is complete.
- Bridge work will start on the Bible Hill (north) side of the bridge, then move to the Truro (south) side once the north side is finished.

There will also be two week-long overnight closures of the bridge from 7 PM to 6 AM daily expected to take place December 2 to 9 and later in December or January (exact dates to be announced at a later date).

There will be variable message boards (VBMs) displaying information regarding the construction work, located near the Engine Room (Truro) and near Century Honda (Bible Hill).

Construction schedules can change rapidly with work and weather conditions. For current updates, check: https://511.novascotia.ca/
